Why I stopped using Squarespace campaigns & ecommerce

Most of you know me as the ultimate Squarespace cheerleader, always finding ways to make the most of this powerful platform. So why am I, of all people, recommending another tool for something Squarespace can already handle?
While Squarespace is my go-to for all things website, when it comes to selling digital products and managing email lists, Flodesk is the secret sauce that takes it to a whole new level.
It’s not for lack of trying; I've been in the trenches, dealing with expired download links, generic emails, and clunky workarounds. But when I switched to Flodesk for my emails and my digital product sales, everything changed.
Digital Product Sales
When you sell a digital download in Squarespace, the experience is far from perfect. Not only do people get too many auto emails that are tricky to brand with the fonts and colors I use, the link they get to access to digital download? It expires in 24 hours.
Before Flodesk, I would get multiple emails a day asking for a new link. Each request meant manually looking up the original order and resending their product, and reminding them to bookmark it. With a few thousands of sales over the years, I would spend an average of 2 - 3 hours a week just managing orders.
And to make matters worse, this digital product? It had to be a file, not a link. For years I sold one page PDF's with a full page link to the actual digital product. It was an unprofessional mess. When someone buys one of my digital products using Flodesk checkout, they get an on-brand thank you page that links to the product, and an on-brand thank you email with that same link. No expiration dates to deal with, no clunky follow up emails, just pure “here is the thing you want" magic.
Email Management
Squarespace Campaigns was a great option when I started my business. I had 3 freebies to deliver, and a simply weekly email to send out. But as my business grew, Campaigns did not grow with it.
I started selling a digital product and wanted to promote it in my weekly newsletter, but I didn't want people who already had it to get the sales emails about it.
Then my lead magnet library grew, and I was sending follow up emails after people purchased products to make sure they were happy.
All that added up and I quickly ran out of automations, and people were getting way too many emails from me.
With Flodesk, I have unlimited automations, and I can set up workflows and segments that just make sense for my business model. I can focus on delivering the right value to the right people at the right time. When someone signs up for a freebie of mine, they aren't thrown into my weekly email list right away. They get a chance to learn more about me and what I do, and then they get moved over when it's time.
And if they sign up for more than one freebie (which people often do) they don't repeat the process! Flodesk helped me streamline my email strategy so I wont be overbearing on day one.
TL;DR: You can be a Squarespace user and Flodesk fan like me
When it comes to selling digital products, Flodesk eliminated the headaches of expired download links, generic emails, and unprofessional PDF workarounds. No more spending hours each week manually resending products; just a seamless, on-brand experience for my customers from start to finish.
And when it comes to email management, Squarespace Campaigns just couldn't keep up with my growing business. I needed more automations, segmentation, and the ability to nurture my subscribers without bombarding them. Flodesk delivered all that and more, giving me the tools to send the right message to the right people at the right time.
