New Video Block Options in Squarespace

Tired of the same-old, standard video blocks on your Squarespace website?
Good news: Squarespace just updated their video block options for 7.1 sites and your dreams of customizing and selecting from a variety of video block options just came true!
Whether you’re looking to tell a story or showcase some amazing visuals, using these newly released video blocks is sure to give your website an engaging edge. Your audience will be fully captivated with all that dynamic movement as they explore your site.
In this post we'll take a look at how to use them and the best ways to create visually stunning content without sacrificing user experience!
Here’s whats new for uploaded videos:
Mute: When you click this option, your video will be silent, even if you have autoplay on. If you still have the player controls enabled, people visiting your website can unmute the video.
Autoplay: This will start your video automatically when it loads on the screen. Be SUPER careful with this one! If your video is longer than 5 seconds, and you don’t give users the ability to stop the video, you’ll be violating WCAG accessibility standards.
Loop video: 🎶 This is the clip that never ends 🎶 You can select the loop option so your video keeps on going. Great for short clips that aren’t gif files!
Player Controls: You have three options here; all, minimal, and none. All displays a play/pause button over the center of the video, along with time elapsed and total time on the left, volume control and full screen on the right, and a progress bar along the bottom. Minimal only shows the progress bar, and none shows, well, nothing at all!
Important things to know:
Even if you select “none” for the player controls, clicking on the video will start/pause it. This happens for autoplay videos too.
You can only use autoplay if you have the mute option enabled.
If your video is on autoplay but you haven’t selected loop, your player controls will display at the end of the video unless you select the none option.
These are only for uploaded videos. Videos that you link to on other sites, like YouTube and Vimeo don’t have these options. Those are usually controlled by the site you uploaded from and aren’t very customizable.
