[00:00:00] Squarespace is constantly making changes to the platform, so we've got the latest and greatest to work with. And in this episode, I'm sharing five recent changes. Two are pretty cool, two are not so cool, and one of them I'm kind of neutral about because it doesn't affect me, but it might affect you.
[00:00:15] That's what we're covering here in episode 92 of Think Inside the Square.
[00:00:18] intro music
[00:00:27] Welcome to episode 92 of Think Inside the Square, or as I'd like to call it today, Think on the Porch. I'm Becca from Inside the Square. My original recording of this from the studio that I rented was corrupted. The file got corrupted. So, uh, here I am sitting on my porch. But a shout-out to the Adobe team.
[00:00:44] The people who worked on the Adobe Podcast Tools created an enhanced audio tool that I'm using to update the audio of this, so it still sounds like studio quality even though I've got some traffic going by. Now, I'm recording this outside on the porch because I've got a baby just on the other side of that door who is taking a [00:01:00] nap.
[00:01:00] Got an eye on her, and, uh, yeah, we're gonna get to it. Five updates that Squarespace has made fairly recently, I'd say within the last six months or so. Two of them good, two of them not so great in my opinion, and one of them that doesn't really affect me, but it might affect you. Let's go ahead and start with that one.
[00:01:16] Do you use Squarespace campaigns? I do not. But if you do, they now have automatic tagging for anyone that makes a purchase or any customers on your website. So here's how it used to work. Maybe you set up an email newsletter where you wanna send out something every week or send out a newsletter blast where you talk about a new product.
[00:01:34] Now you can send out that newsletter blast, but make sure you filter out the people who have already purchased said product, so you're not advertising something that they already own. Now, I already use Flodesk for all of my email management, and they've got that feature with segments in there, so this update didn't really affect me.
[00:01:50] But if you use Squarespace campaigns, it sounds pretty useful. So hopefully automatic tagging is a great update for you that you're excited about. Now let's talk about another update that I am [00:02:00] very excited about. This one has been a long time coming. If you sell anything in Squarespace and you have product pages, the individual product pages, you might remember not so long ago, we used to have a section called additional product details.
[00:02:14] It was classic editor. We could hop in there and add content blocks and add spacers. We couldn't really change it on mobile. There was not a lot of customization that was happening there. Well, they have changed the game for us, my friends. The team at Squarespace has given us the ability to add, drum roll, please.
[00:02:30] We can now add individual page sections to an individual product page. Yeah, that's right. Different full fluid engine page sections on individual products. Now, a little pro tip for you, because I just helped a client do this last week. We created a new page for this new line of merch in their store, and we created a new section
[00:02:49] And this section that we created had a size chart, and it had more details about the actual merch that they were selling. But what we did was design this section to be perfect. We double-checked it on mobile. We made [00:03:00] sure everything looked awesome, and then we saved that section so we could easily add it to other items.
[00:03:05] Because the page section that we can now have on individual product pages is a section that you can save site-wide or account-wide. Definitely a cool feature, and I'm really glad that Squarespace made that update
[00:03:16] Now, one of the things that they also changed recently, , you probably got an email about it on July 7th, especially if you're based in the United States, they changed pricing on us. Yes, second year in a row. Now, of course, I'm disappointed about a price increase for my own business and the multiple websites I have on Squarespace, because it's definitely difficult to have to adjust a budget halfway through the year and, , I know a lot of my clients aren't very happy about it either.
[00:03:42] But at the end of the day, it's a few more dollars a month. And again, while I do find that disappointing, I also recognize that Squarespace is still my favorite platform for creating content, for hosting everything, for building a site I can easily hand off to a client. And let's be real, I've put so much work into these projects [00:04:00] already, the idea of moving them from this platform to another one would take so much time and effort.
[00:04:05] I would have to find a way to build a bunch of workarounds for stuff that I already figured out how to do in Squarespace. While I'm disappointed it's a few extra dollars a month, I'm glad that it isn't, like, a crazy
[00:04:16] 500% increase or something way worse.
[00:04:19] It honestly makes me think about when I get emails from Netflix or Hulu saying, "I upped your subscription price by $1 a month." And while $12 over the whole year shouldn't be that big of a deal in the grand scheme of my budget for entertainment, it definitely is still disappointing, and I can't imagine it from the other side.
[00:04:35] Can you imagine sending out one email and then all of a sudden you get like $3 million or more? They probably have way more subscribers than that. But you get what I'm trying to say here. So let's just say I hope that with all of this extra funding, Squarespace is gonna have even more cool updates for us in the future.
[00:04:51] Now, one other thing related to pricing that's changed about Squarespace, they're working a lot on pushing AI right now. They have a new AI visibility [00:05:00] feature that lets us track information about how our websites are showing up in AI search results just like it was showing us information on how we were being served on Google and Bing searches in the past. So this new feature is something that they're working out pricing for. Now, I've gotta be totally honest. I was in a meeting not too long ago
[00:05:18] where they shared the pricing plan for this, and I was definitely like that, famous meme of the lady with, like, all the math and numbers stuff running around her head. Really, I was super confused with the way that they set up this pricing, so hopefully we'll get some clarity on this in the future.
[00:05:31] As soon as we do find out what price covers how many prompts and how many answers and all that kind of information, I'll be sure to share it on my blog and in my email newsletter list. So pay attention for that. But I wanted to mention that in my Squarespace updates episode. Something's going on with AI.
[00:05:45] They're pushing it pretty hard, and they're finding different ways to charge us for different types of use. So I will include links in the show notes to the official announcement. Definitely check that out when you've got the time
[00:05:55] All right, so I talked about the email change where we can now tag customers and filter them out [00:06:00] of emails, talked about the awesome product pages, talked about the change of Squarespace pricing ,
[00:06:05] the email came out on July 7th, so definitely double-check your inbox if you didn't see it or log into Squarespace, and I'm gonna encourage all of you, log into Squarespace and double-check your pricing. See how much you're paying on average. See if you do monthly or annually. What's going on there? Because things might have changed.
[00:06:20] All right, and we talked about their AI features, AI visibility, and then we're going to start being charged with the token system they're creating, the ever-so-complicated, someday I'll understand it token system. And again, the show notes for this episode will have links to all of this information insidethesquare.co/podcast/92
[00:06:38] Now, there was one more update that I have to talk about, and that is animations and transformations
[00:06:44] Such an exciting update. I get way more into this in a video that I actually did earlier in the year. I show you a lot of behind the scenes and in a podcast I'm not gonna share my screen and show you behind the scenes, but Here's the quick rundown. I have definitely fallen in love with these new features that we have.
[00:06:59] We've [00:07:00] got button blocks, images, shapes, text, and I believe forms as well. Now, it's so cool because we can finally do something we've always wanted to do and scoot content blocks around just a little bit, or maybe rotate them just a little bit. We have all of these things we can do for the main, like, static space of where that particular content block is. That's the transformation side of things. Animations are even cooler. We can do things like have it change, uh, size or rotation on a hover. We can do things on a scroll effect when you scroll past the block or even scroll past the section. There are a lot of cool things here, but I will say I do find it ironic, the first code I ever made for Squarespace was how to change the color of a button on a hover, and we still can't do that in Squarespace.
[00:07:45] We still need code for it, which is a little crazy to me. But anyway, I do think the animations and transformations are cool. They have rolled out to more content blocks. Fingers crossed they will roll out to even more things in the future. I'd love the ability for us to control a [00:08:00] lot more about the way the site interacts with people and how it behaves when someone moves their cursor, for example.
[00:08:06] We have a few new features available now, and hopefully we'll be getting more later, but animations and transformations, check the show notes for more details. Before you start adding a gazillion of them to your site, one word of caution: use them sparingly. If everything is moving, if everything is responding, if everything on your website is exciting, then nothing's exciting, okay?
[00:08:27] I don't want you to design something that just has so much movement and noise that it's barely usable and that you're not directing people to the main goal of that page or the main goal of your site. So animations, transformations, they're awesome, but please use them sparingly. If you put those on every single content block you can, all you're going to do is overwhelm and distract your visitors, and that's not what we want. That's not our job as the website creator, the website designer. Use a little bit of discretion here for me, okay? All right, so that's it for the top five updates that I wanted to cover.
[00:08:58] I'm Becca from [00:09:00] Inside the Square. I hope you enjoyed this episode of On the Porch. Definitely a, an interesting way to share a podcast, but I did not want to skip a week because I post a brand-new episode every single Tuesday, and this one is coming out tomorrow. So thank you so much for tuning in. Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed it.
[00:09:17] If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to cover for an upcoming episode, feel free to email me anytime, hello@insidethesquare.co. Thank you so much for listening, and most importantly, have fun with your Squarespace website. Bye for now.
Squarespace never stops changing, and this episode breaks down five recent updates worth knowing about, two I love, two I'm not thrilled about, and one that might not affect me but could matter for you.
We start with automatic customer tagging inside Squarespace Campaigns. If you use Squarespace's built-in email marketing, you can now filter out anyone who already purchased a product before sending a promotional blast. I use Flodesk for my email marketing, so this update doesn't touch my workflow, but if you're on Squarespace Campaigns, it's a useful one

Next is a genuine win: individual product pages can finally hold their own Fluid Engine page sections. For years, product detail areas were stuck in the classic editor with barely any mobile control. Now you can build a fully custom section, complete with size charts or extra product details, save it site-wide, and reuse it across other products. I walk through how I used this for a client's new merch line.

Then there's the update nobody loves, except for maybe the Squarespace accounting department: Squarespace raised prices again, with the change going out by email on July 7th. It's the second year in a row for a price increase. I share why I'm staying on the platform despite the extra cost, and I'd recommend logging into your account to check your current plan and billing.

Related to pricing, Squarespace is also rolling out a new AI visibility feature that tracks how your site shows up in AI search results, similar to how Google and Bing analytics have worked in the past. The pricing structure for this one is still being finalized, and I'll share details on the blog and in my newsletter once it's clearer.

Last up: animations and transformations have expanded to more content blocks, including buttons, images, shapes, text, and forms. You can now shift, rotate, and animate elements on hover or scroll. I share why I'm excited about this feature and one important word of caution: use it sparingly, or you risk overwhelming your visitors instead of guiding them.

Your to do list: Pick one update from this episode and go check how it applies to your own Squarespace site this week… I strongly suggest you make that one your current pricing 😬
